Long-time Guild member Doris Freitag passed away on May 5, 2023, after several years of declining health. Doris joined the Guild in the 1960s and was present at the first Boston meeting of Guild members in the 1966. She organized the first Standards Seminar held in Boston. Doris was a book conservator at Harvard University for 48 years and mentored many conservators during her long career. She was an advisor to the bookbinding program at the North Bennet Street School in Boston since the courses began in 1986, serving as an advisor until the very last years of her life.  She mentored students from the school with encouragement and training. 

 

There will be a celebration of Doris’ extraordinary life on September 13, 2023, from 3-5 p.m. at the Harvard Divinity School Library, Rabinowitz Room, 45 Francis Ave, Cambridge, MA 02138. Light refreshments will be served.

To honor Doris' memory and contributions to the field of bookbinding, friends and family are invited to make a charitable gift to the North Bennet Street School, where Doris was involved in the Bookbinding program since the 1980s. Memorial gifts can be made online, or by check or stock transfer. Checks can be mailed to NBSS, 150 North St, Boston MA 02109. All gifts should be made out to NBSS, in memory of Doris Freitag.
