For centuries paper has served as a quick, elegant, and economical
covering material for books. This versatile material can create
structures ranging from pocket notebooks to conservation friendly
bindings to cases durable enough for a heavily-used manual.
Students will craft four binding models:
• Multi-Section Pamphlet with flexi flyleaf
• Longstitch into paper wrapper with Yapp fore edge
• Single station link stitch with decorative guards and self-locking
cover
• Paper binding sewn on exposed supports
Newer binders will be introduced to basic tools, techniques and
materials of the craft. Experienced practitioners will discover how
features from multiple bindings can be combined to create a new, custom
structure to meet the requirements of any project. All of these
structures can be made in a sparsely-equipped home studio with minimal
specialized tools or equipment. This attractive set of models, together
with detailed handouts, will be a valuable reference and inspiration for
future projects.
Handsewn Endbands
Five Thursday sessions October through December 2024.

Handsewn endbands are an elegant addition to any binding. They are not
difficult to make, and with little a practice you’ll sew them in a flash
and remember the technique forever. Students will learn a variety of
endbands practicing first on flat corrugated plastic then sewing on
rounded, backed text blocks.
Endbands are the idea skill to learn online: the view is so much larger
on even the smallest device than you could get peering over the
instructor’s shoulder. The recordings will allow you to watch the demo
over and over, and at a normal, slowed down or accelerated speed.
There are a total of five online workshops in this Endbands series. They
are designed to complement each other, but each workshop may be taken as
a stand-alone, with no prerequisite of taking the previous workshops in
the series. Taking all five workshops, however, will give you both depth
and breadth in this important aspect of binding.
Karen Hanmer Book Arts offers workshops and private instruction to
working practitioners and dedicated hobbyists, focusing on a solid
foundation in traditional binding skills.
