Hey Everyone!
Scholarship applications for the 2026 Paper and Book Intensive are open now through 11:59pm on December 31, 2025. Read below to learn more about the various opportunities. You can apply directly here. General registration opens January 1, 2026. Click here to see our 2026 lineup of classes and instructors. If you have any questions, please feel free to email me at brien@paperbookintensive.org.
We are also excited to share a new scholarship: the Tom Balbo Scholarship for Working Artists, generously funded by one of our co-directors, Tom Balbo! Thank you Tom! See below for the full description.
Applicants may apply for all awards for which they are eligible. These awards are selected by a jury, based on specific criteria described for each award. Funding opportunities are intended to assist those who could not otherwise attend PBI for financial reasons, and priority is given to those who haven't attended before.
Full Scholarship Opportunities (3):
The Book Explorer Scholarship (1): Awarded to an applicant with a primary interest and evident proficiency in bookbinding and/or conservation, this scholarship is supported by a gift from the late Pamela Spitzmueller, conservator and long-time PBI co-director. Pam’s book work was often inspired by historical book structures. She was enthusiastic and inquisitive—experimenting and innovating in her conservation work and her creative book work. The fellowship covers full tuition, room, and board.
Paper and Book Inclusivity (PBI) Scholarship (1): This scholarship is offered to a US resident whose interests align with studies in the book arts and whose background is under-represented in the profession(s). For PBI 2026, priority will go to black and indigenous applicants. This fellowship covers full tuition, room, and board.
NEW Tom Balbo Scholarship for Working Artists (1): This scholarship is intended for a self-employed practitioner, one who makes their living primarily from making and selling their work, and for whom professional development opportunities are often out of reach. This may include supplementing one's income through teaching short courses, engaging in occasional adjunct appointments, or part-time work in community-based arts organizations. This fellowship covers full tuition, room, and board.
Half Tuition Scholarship Opportunities (6):
Nell Meldahl Work-Study Half Scholarship (6): PBI offers six half-tuition work-study awards in honor of Nell Meldahl. Nell Meldahl was an inspiring PBI instructor and conservator of East Asian art who passed away far too early in her career. Her family and friends created a scholarship in her name which is now sustained with funds raised each year from the PBI auction.
Again, if you have any questions, please don't hesitate to reach out to me at brien@paperbookintensive.org. We look forward to seeing your application!
Cheers,
Brien
