View all threadsHello, all. A friend reached out with the query below. Wondering if anyone
knows/knew G. A. Ruzicka and can put a name to the initials? Other info
would be welcome as well.
You can respond directly to David or to me and I'll pass any info along.
Thanks!
Best,
M

Colleagues,
We are trying to identify, very specifically, who the binder “G.A. Ruzicka”
was or is—which is to say, what first names the initials represent. This
binder worked relatively recently, as the binding we have in hand was
created in 1981. We’ve pored over the history of the Ruzicka bindery that
was based both in Greensboro, NC and Baltimore, MD, and have spoken with a
member of the Ruzicka family—but who could not identify “G.A.” Photos of
the binding and G.A.’s stamp are linked in this message.
The binding was created in 1981 for a catalog surveying the Old Master
Italian holdings in the Baltimore Museum of Art, and the whole was
presented to the museum’s leading Italian curator as a retirement tribute.
Museum staff were proud enough to list details in the card, and they may
light a bulb for you: “Your binding is sewn by hand on 5 double hemp cords
with unbleached Irish linen thread, hand sewn silk endbands, covered in
full goat-skin leather, tooled by hand with 23K gold, including end sheets
of hand marbled and English handmade paper; the tooling design is based on
a 16th-c. Italian original.”

That is in all likely good Glen Ruzicka, last at CCAHA, and before that Johns Hopkins and Library of Congress.
