The Sewn Boards Binding is Gary Frost’s elegant, modern adaptation of an
ancient method of board attachment. Stiffened outer folios sewn along
with the text block function as the book’s boards. The book opens flat.
It can be dressed up or down with a variety of spine treatments,
board-covering materials, and edge decoration techniques.
This workshop highlights the versatility of the Sewn Boards binding by
presenting the original plus four variations on the classic quarter
cloth structure.

The basic structure of a fine leather binding has changed little over
the past 300 years. The text block is sewn onto supports, the spine
carefully shaped, and the boards laced on. The book is covered in
leather that has been precision-pared for protection, flexibility, and a
sumptuous presentation.
This year’s topic is crafting a full leather fine binding with sunken
doublures and suede flyleaves. Additional features include multi-color
sewn endbands and champhered boards. Students will further refine their
binding and leather-working skills with the focus shifting beyond mere
protection of the text to an elegant presentation.
