More on Tim:
Timothy Barrett is professor emeritus in the University of Iowa Center for
the Book and the School of Library and Information Science. His career
started with a Fulbright Fellowship where he studied papermaking in Japan.
His later research on early European handmade papers resulted in his receiving
a MacArthur Fellowship in 2009. He specializes in handmade papers for fine
press printers, book artists, and conservators of rare books and works of
art on paper. One of his many achievements was to produce a special paper
for the Charters of Freedom at the National Archives Rotunda in Washington
DC, where our nation’s Declaration of Independence, Bill of Rights, and
Constitution rest on the paper he created with his students and colleagues.
Barrett is author of three books, one website, eight videos, and thirty-six
articles or book chapters on the history, technique, science, and
aesthetics of hand papermaking. He was director of the Center between 1996
and 2002 and again became director in the fall of 2012 until his retirement
in May of 2020.
Examples of his work will also be on display.
The William D. Minter Lectureship in Conservation was established in 2019
to raise awareness and
advance the knowledge of book and special collection conservation history,
theory, and practice.
