I’ll be teaching three in-person workshops over five days at the Focus
on Book Arts conference in Forest Grove, Oregon July 15-19, 2022

THE SPRINGBACK BINDING
Friday-Sunday July 15-17
This nineteenth century Springback Binding was originally used for
account books. With its enthusiastic opening, it is ideal for journals,
guest books, sketch books, or any application where it is desirable that
the book open flat, with complete access to the gutter. The book both
opens and closes with a satisfying jolt. The Springback Binding is also
a perfect way to delve more deeply into traditional binding. The book
features two-part “split boards”, reinforced “made” endsheets, and a
“spring” made of layers of card and paper. With its robust aesthetic,
the Springback Binding is a great way to begin working with leather. The
paring requires minimal finesse, and the modest leather headcaps are
easy to form.

TWO BASIC ENDBANDS
Monday July 18
Students will practice two basic endbands first flat on corrugated
plastic, then on rounded, backed text blocks: one color bead on the
spine, and two-color bead at the front. The bead at the front is
appropriate for contemporary work, the bead on the spine is appropriate
for medieval structures.

TWO PLAYFUL STRUCTURES: THE JACOB’S LADDER AND THE HINGED TRIANGLE BOOK
Tuesday July 19
These artists’ book structures function on numerous levels: as a codex
held in the hand and read page by page in sequence, as a sculpture, and
as a delightful object to play with. Both can be made in a home studio
with minimal specialized equipment. Instruction will focus on both craft
and content. Students will have the opportunity to examine a variety of
finished pieces and models. Importance of creating and refining
prototypes will be stressed. Your two finished books, plus detailed
instructions, will be a valuable reference for future work.
