View all threadsHi everyone,
I’ll echo Todd’s suggestion for a musical interlude in the pre-function
space to signal the end of cocktail hour in the beginning of dinner. Jim
established this tradition a while ago, so I think it will suit everyone
perfectly without altering our schedule or AV situation.
I want to encourage everyone who’s interested to take a look at the
standards website where both vendors and attendees are available for
members to view so that you can reach out accordingly and talk amongst
yourselves.
Todd, thank you for getting the ball rolling on this. I look forward to
seeing you all at Standards.

on the boards who are musically inclined, it may help to get the word

Also, if Peter and Donna will be there, I guarantee there will be a
ukelele and an accordion.
I think Jim always travels with his trombone, so I wouldn’t be surprised
if he wants to join in.

There has been a suggestion made that this might be a good thing to do to
signal the end of the cocktail hour and the move into the dinner. Just
playing, so singing, but I think that When the Saints might work really
well as a song for that.
Adding any projection at this point is costly so we probably need to
avoid that. I also think a sing-along might take away a little bit from the
musical instrument part of it.
Again, I do appreciate the brainstorming for making this special for Jim.
If you are planning on bringing an instrument, please be in touch with me
so we can coordinate this. Also, if you know others that are let them know
to be in touch with me.
A big thanks!

I am extremely terrible and unpracticed at ukulele improv since
pandemic times but you may know that one way to organize this is to pick a
few of popular tunes that people can download chord or “tab” sheets for,
practice & bring with them to jam in a basic key arrangement.

Jennifer reached out to me about this last week(?) and asked if I could bring a ukulele. I said I try to take one wherever I travel. I also told her that Shannon Kerner also plays. To Nora’s point, if we have 3 ukuleles, we’ll probably be heard.
I once spent about an hour at Jim’s house playing the ukulele while Melody played the piano and Jim played his trombone, so a ukulele might be fitting. A trumpet being a brass instrument would also be fitting. If singing is out, I think if we have a trumpet and/or flute and/or whatever instrument that can play a melody, ukuleles or other chordophones could strum backup chords.
I think "When the Saints Go Marching In" is an excellent idea, since that ties directly back to Jim. I lead a ukulele play-along group at my local library every month, so I can help put chord sheets together (with diagrams and everything for Nora!). I can also put some sheet music for the other instruments together, but I might need guidance from the other instrument players. I’m sort of a music theory hobbyist, so I will defer to anyone who’s a professional.

I once spent about an hour at Jim’s house playing the ukulele while Melody

fitting. A trumpet being a brass instrument would also be fitting. If
singing is out, I think if we have a trumpet and/or flute and/or whatever

strum backup chords.
I think "When the Saints Go Marching In" is an excellent idea, since that
ties directly back to Jim. I lead a ukulele play-along group at my local
library every month, so I can help put chord sheets together (with diagrams

I put together the melody in B-flat for multiple instruments and put it in the https://drive.google.com/drive/folders/14MrSoXdJtdPSeVPdeUscPq0Y45c-rfmW?usp=sharingfolder https://drive.google.com/drive/folders/14MrSoXdJtdPSeVPdeUscPq0Y45c-rfmW. I chose B-flat because it’s supposed to be the easiest key for the majority of instruments here.
It’s NOT the easiest key for ukulele, so I’ve place 3 ukulele versions in the folder. One in B-flat, one in A (place a capo on fret 1 and play the A key shapes), and one in G (place the capo on 3 and play the G key shapes). That way whoever brings a uke can strum in a key they’re comfortable with. I gave it a strum pattern that lets the ukuleles stand out but also be in the background. I added a ukulele tab/solo part, but I’m not very good at fingerpicking.
As for the harmonica, the piece in the folder is in the key of C, so that music won’t work if we do it in B-flat (unless you have a B-flat harmonica, I think. Don’t quote me on that).
As for the other instruments, let me know if this needs to be in a different key. It’s not too hard for me to change. I can also split out the parts if you want something with just your instrument on it.
I can also add parts for more instruments.
This is VERY basic. We can talk more about how to spice it up (break out solo or duet parts, have someone improvise outside their part, whatever you’re capable of). I can add harmony, too, if anyone wants to play something other than the melody. We also don’t have to spice it up at all—everyone will enjoy it even if we’re bad.
I’ve exported audio and put it in the folder so you can get a sense of what it might sound like, but don’t count on it sounding exactly the same. Some of the instruments will likely be louder and others will be softer.
If I missed anything from this email chain that I should’ve incorporated into the music, let me know.

Thank you for taking the lead on this, Chris!
I haven't played the harmonica since last century, so I'll remove the C major part and leave it to you and the ukes.

I can also put some sheet music for the other instruments together, but I might need guidance from the other instrument players. https://drive.google.com/drive/folders/14MrSoXdJtdPSeVPdeUscPq0Y45c-rfmW.
I chose B-flat because it’s supposed to be the easiest key for the
majority of instruments here.
It’s NOT the easiest key for ukulele, so I’ve place 3 ukulele versions in
the folder. One in B-flat, one in A (place a capo on fret 1 and play the A
key shapes), and one in G (place the capo on 3 and play the G key shapes).
That way whoever brings a uke can strum in a key they’re comfortable with.
I gave it a strum pattern that lets the ukuleles stand out but also be in
the background. I added a ukulele tab/solo part, but I’m not very good at
fingerpicking.
As for the harmonica, the piece in the folder is in the key of C, so that
music won’t work if we do it in B-flat (unless you have a B-flat harmonica,
I think. Don’t quote me on that).
As for the other instruments, let me know if this needs to be in a
different key. It’s not too hard for me to change. I can also split out the
parts if you want something with just your instrument on it.
I can also add parts for more instruments.
This is VERY basic. We can talk more about how to spice it up (break out
solo or duet parts, have someone improvise outside their part, whatever
you’re capable of). I can add harmony, too, if anyone wants to play
something other than the melody. We also don’t have to spice it up at
all—everyone will enjoy it even if we’re bad.
I’ve exported audio and put it in the folder so you can get a sense of
what it might sound like, but don’t count on it sounding exactly the same.
Some of the instruments will likely be louder and others will be softer.
If I missed anything from this email chain that I should’ve incorporated
into the music, let me know.

we’ll probably be heard.
I once spent about an hour at Jim’s house playing the ukulele while
Melody played the piano and Jim played his trombone, so a ukulele might be
fitting. A trumpet being a brass instrument would also be fitting. If
singing is out, I think if we have a trumpet and/or flute and/or whatever
instrument that can play a melody, ukuleles or other chordophones could
strum backup chords.
I think "When the Saints Go Marching In" is an excellent idea, since
that ties directly back to Jim. I lead a ukulele play-along group at my
local library every month, so I can help put chord sheets together (with
diagrams and everything for Nora!). I can also put some sheet music for the
other instruments together, but I might need guidance from the other
instrument players. I’m sort of a music theory hobbyist, so I will defer to

Adding any projection at this point is costly so we probably need to

few of popular tunes that people can download chord or “tab” sheets for,
