Hi All,
I've been working on a pair of 19th c scrapbooks lately and I wanted to
share some pictures of them. This is a structure I had never seen before,
the guards are thick sections of paper folded on itself. Each guard had a
signature nested inside and they were sewn all along onto tapes, originally
with a layer of the same paper as the guard paper adhered over the whole
spine. For treatment, I had to remove the signatures, so instead of
dis-binding the whole thing I pulled the signatures and left the guards and
the sewing supports intact and eventually returned the treated signatures
to the original structure. Hope the narrative and these pictures are of
interest.
cheers,
eliza
