Scholarships info

Hello Chapter Chairs,

I promised to follow up with more scholarship information and you all
probably saw that the Standards registration info came out yesterday. So
here are the numbers:

  1. The break-even cost for GBW is essentially the student registration
    rate: $255.
  2. The cost for a single occupancy hotel room for 4 nights (Wednesday
    October 19-Saturday October 22) is $934.08.
  3. A ticket to the banquet is $70.

We have a budget from the previous auction to award 9 full scholarships.
Your chapter is welcome to sponsor additional folks at whatever level you
would like. For example, you can contribute just registration, registration
and banquet, etc. I think in the past we have not expected chapter
scholarship recipients to volunteer their time the same way
other recipients do. But I'm sure there will be volunteer needs at the
event, if you would like to add that as a stipulation. Larry can update you
on your chapter account balances so that you can make an informed
decision. Keep in mind that Standards is in California in 2023, so we
anticipate costs to be higher.

I think the scholarship committee can find a way to coordinate with you on
the application process, if that would help. You could encourage your
members to apply through the regular scholarship process (
https://gbw.formstack.com/forms/scholarships2022). The committee will
select the 9 full scholarships from the entire pool according to need, then
we can recommend a ranked list of remaining applicants from your chapter.
We will be using an existing matrix, so that work will already be done.
Just a thought.

Think about it and get in touch if I can facilitate in any way. I know
scholarships of any kind will be appreciated with the high travel costs
this year.

Take care,
HH

Thanks to the California and Midwest Chapters! I will let Jenn and Larry
know about these.

The scholarship form doesn't close until July 8th, so we still have time to
iron out the scholarship committee's process. It's important that you
decide if you are going to sponsor anyone sooner though, so we can hold
enough registrations in reserve. Larry also informed me that in the past
two chapters have co-sponsored a single scholarship, so that could be
another option. I can handle registrations, but I will need to clarify how
we should do hotel reservations if you are offering that. I will follow up.

You can announce to your members that the chapter will be offering a
scholarship and instruct them to apply through the regular scholarship
form: https://gbw.formstack.com/forms/scholarships2022

The scoring matrix looks like this:
1- Student? 2- First Standards? 3- First scholarship? 4- Financial Need 5-
Personal/ Professional Benefit
6- Reference #1
7- Reference #2

Columns 1-3 just get a score of either 0 or 1. Columns 4-7 are scored on a
scale of 1-3 by each committee member based on application materials and we
take the average. Add Questions 1-3 and averages of 4-7 together and we
should have a ranked list of applicants. When the committee is done with
selection of the 9 national org scholarships, I can sort remaining
applicants by chapter and send your list with our scores. I can also share
statements of interest and reference letters so you can make the final
determination. How does that sound?

I think we have a board meeting next week, so we can discuss further.

Thanks,
HH

A ticket to the banquet is $70.
We have a budget from the previous auction to award 9 full scholarships. Your chapter is welcome to sponsor additional folks at whatever level you would like. For example, you can contribute just registration, registration and banquet, etc. I think in the past we have not expected chapter scholarship recipients to volunteer their time the same way other recipients do. But I'm sure there will be volunteer needs at the event, if you would like to add that as a stipulation. Larry can update you on your chapter account balances so that you can make an informed decision. Keep in mind that Standards is in California in 2023, so we anticipate costs to be higher.

I think the scholarship committee can find a way to coordinate with you on the application process, if that would help. You could encourage your members to apply through the regular scholarship process (https://gbw.formstack.com/forms/scholarships2022). The committee will select the 9 full scholarships from the entire pool according to need, then we can recommend a ranked list of remaining applicants from your chapter. We will be using an existing matrix, so that work will already be done. Just a thought.

Think about it and get in touch if I can facilitate in any way. I know scholarships of any kind will be appreciated with the high travel costs this year.

Take care,
HH

You could encourage your members to apply through the regular scholarship process (https://gbw.formstack.com/forms/scholarships2022 <https://gbw.formstack.com/forms/scholarships2022>). The committee will select the 9 full scholarships from the entire pool according to need, then we can recommend a ranked list of remaining applicants from your chapter. We will be using an existing matrix, so that work will already be done. Just a thought. >> >> Think about it and get in touch if I can facilitate in any way.
