Opening August 15 and running through October 15, Neutral Territory is a show of Kim Matthews sculptures, wall reliefs and intimate drawings.

Neutral Territory is one of a group of shows of Kim Matthews (http://www.kimmatthewsart.com?mc_cid=fd00ad0f68&mc_eid=UNIQID) ’ work spanning three venues this fall. Fifteen artworks will be available at Susan Hensel Gallery on Artsy (https://www.artsy.net/show/susan-hensel-gallery-neutral-territory?sort=partner_show_position&mc_cid=fd00ad0f68&mc_eid=UNIQID) and two large works will occupy the windows of the brick-and-mortar Susan Hensel Gallery in Minneapolis at 3441 Cedar Ave S, Minneapolis. Rounding out what is functionally a mini-retrospective is the show Objects of Affection, a solo exhibition of colorful recent sculptures and works on paper, opening October 2 at Douglas Flanders & Associates in Minneapolis.

“I’m interested in the ineffable qualities of “objectness”—what is sometimes called aura—as well as materiality and process as vehicles for spiritual engagement. My work is rooted in a long-term meditation practice; making drawings and sculptures is a complementary discipline of devotion. I use tactility to draw the viewer into the work and toward introspection through the seduction of intense looking.” Kim Matthews

Her work is physical, with the surfaces often built out of repetitive two- and three-dimensional features that undulate and shift through their pattern. Similarity and difference, repetition and interruption. It has a mesmerizing effect. Matthews’ work has a way of doing this to the viewer. It begins to pull at a string, some little feature you notice, and soon you are unravelling to ever deeper levels of being. It is a descent into the depths of the ocean, a meditative journey into transcendent reality.

“I first got to know Kim around 5 or 6 years ago when I gave her a ride home from a meeting. Unbeknownst to me, we were neighbors. Now we are professional associates and, yes, friends. I am passionate about this work. From the moment I first saw the work, I was captivated. It is tactile. ( You’ll have to trust me on that!) It looks heavy but is deceptively light weight. It is impeccably made, precise even, yet retains the mark of the hand. It is very personal work, for both the viewer and the maker. I own two of her pieces and spend time everyday regarding them. They do not grow old, revealing their depth and continuing newness time and time again.” Susan Hensel

The Susan Hensel Gallery is proud to present this incredible exhibit as an online exclusive show as well as a window show. The Susan Hensel Gallery focuses on compelling objects, meaningful use of materials and engaging sculpture, now available through its online space (http://www.artsy.net/susan-hensel-gallery?mc_cid=fd00ad0f68&mc_eid=UNIQID) .
