MC
Michelle C. Smith
Mon, May 9, 2022 7:35 PM

The San Francisco Public Library is hiring a 3621 Library Conservation Technician II (PCS – Permanent Civil Service) to oversee the Library’s Preservation Program.

Library Conservation Technical II – San Francisco Public Library (3621) – (REF10501E) https://careers.sf.gov/role/?id=743999825323474

Application Opening – May 9, 2021
Application Deadline – May 20, 2021 (11:59 PM PST)
Compensation Range: $81,406 - $98,930
Recruitment ID: REF10501E

PERSONAL NOTE: This job posting is for my future supervisor. I’m happy to answer any questions you might have that you think HR can’t answer (about the collections, the lab amenities, what the work is like, and so on). The “conservation technician” job title does not accurately reflect the nature of this position, which is the head of the preservation department. This person will supervise staff (four at present), order supplies, and perform treatments. The only requirement for this position is three years of experience in the conservation of library books and paper (no degree of any kind required), although I would love to have an experienced supervisor with a strong background in book conservation, preservation administration, or both.

Our lab performs a wide range of activities including shelf prep, bindery prep, preventive conservation, disaster response, circulating collection repair, and conservation treatment of special collections materials for the Main Library and 27 branches. We are located close to BART and have lots of windows. Our union is SEIU 1021, and we are about to vote on a new contract that will give us a 10% raise over the next two years. The premium for health insurance is fully covered. People tend to work here for a long time. Come join me!
