Honoraria for workshop presenters

Hi all,

Midwest is curious what you're offering as honoraria for full-day
workshops, understanding that costs of living differs across regions.

Additionally, are you offering a set rate or paying what the instructor
asks? What extras, if any, are you including?

Many thanks for your input!

Hey!

Great question: something the chapters should discuss!

Potomac, in the last few years (before Covid when we had more IN Person
stuff) has had to raise the daily instructor workshop rate from $600 to
$800 a day, mostly because some instructors we asked wouldn't take 600, and
based on their extensive experience, we negotiated, and some said they were
1000 but took 800. Anyone who isn't able to work with us or negotiate, we
just decided we couldn't afford them and we would have to move on. Some
people are totally cool with the 600 a day. This is for in person; I think
DVC was doing 300 for a zoom instructor.

Some instructors are asking just more than our chapter could handle, but
there are plenty of people who would deal with that price range. We also
pay hotel if they are not local (making local instructors a great choice!).
We have paid plane or train travel as well, but any local travel, members
picked them up and drove them around, and I have just made or acquired all
the lunches for instructors to deal with that aspect.

I personally have taught a variety of classes for Potomac and I did not
take any pay for them. The chapter had given me a gift certificate to an
art store of a symbolic amount, it wasn't enough to equal payment, I think
$100 or 150. Then that was cut off; from what I remember I don't think
Treasurer (Larry) is comfortable with us giving gift certificates, but to
be clear I didn't ask for the gift certificates.  I did a few with no
compensation or gift or anything as well. That's how I've gotten more
workshops on the schedule honestly, is that I taught a bunch myself. Which
is not sustainable as a format! But it is an idea.

Also, Thanks to Larry (and everyone else who helps us with these
workshops). Marianna makes our formstacks (thanks!!). Larry deals with all
the payments and payments to members who paid for the rental of the space
or the hotel with their own money, and any refunds to a member (one time a
member wanted to change who paid for the workshop). The national board
really helps the chapters out on this!

Looking forward to hearing more from other people!

Thanks, Shannon! This is helpful.

Does anyone else have anything to add?

Lisa.
