Friday – Sunday, 10 AM – 5 PM

cost: $497.00

Description: This studio class is designed to challenge common assumptions about the nature of the book and to offer participants an opportunity to make their own bookwork, which incorporates collage, installation, mixed media, painting, photography, sculpture and writing. By exploring a variety of alternative structures, the physical properties of a book, and sequential relationships, students will create both paginated works that include imagery and text, as well as sculptural objects.

Each day students work in and outside of class on a number of assignments. In the beginning of each class students discuss the progress of making their bookwork in group critiques. The instructor will also work individually with each student to assist the person in developing their own concerns. A primary focus of the course will be on how a book functions as a sequence of complex ideas that employs found and unusual materials in three-dimensional book objects. Students who are self-motivated and familiar with working in a focused and concentrated studio environment are encouraged to register.

This class is designed for students to be as exploratory and as inventive as possible. Although a few basic bookbinding structures are demonstrated, this class is not solely about traditional bindings; it is a mixed-media workshop on utilizing the found book as raw and repurposed material. Previous bookbinding experience is useful but is not necessary to enroll.
