Part II: Fit to be Bound

CALL FOR ARTISTS
[Note: artists must be residents of New York State to participate]

Deadline for entries: February 1, 2010
Notification Date: February 16, 2010
Exhibition Dates: April 24-July 11, 2010
Artist Reception: April 30, 2010

PROSPECTUS
In 2010, the Everson Museum of Art introduces The 
Edge of Art: New York State Artist Series as an 
alternative to the traditional Biennial 
Exhibition. Fit to be Bound, the second 
exhibition in a series of four will showcase a 
broad range of artist books created by artists 
currently living in New York State, the first 
survey of its kind at the Everson. The exhibition 
will be an exploration of the various means by 
which contemporary artists have expanded the 
notion of the book form, from the traditional to 
the sculptural, from paper to mixed-media, 
small-scale and oversized. New York artists 
working in all media areencouraged to submit new 
work for the exhibition which will include between 20-30 works of art.

JURORS
The jurors for Fit to be Bound are Everson Senior 
Curator, Debora Ryan, Peter Verheyen, book artist 
and conservator at Syracuse University Special 
Collections, and Hannah Frieser, Director of 
Light Work, Syracuse, NY. Final selections will take place February 1-15, 2010.

TERMS & CONDITIONS
Artists are responsible for all incoming and 
outgoing transportation costs as well as any 
extraordinarymaterials, equipment or labor costs 
required for installation of their work. Artists 
are required to adequately pack and crate works.

The Everson is not responsible for loss or damage 
of artwork during transit. The Museum will 
exercise the utmost care in the handling of 
artwork, but will be liable for damage only resulting from museum negligence.

The Everson reserves the right to photograph or 
use reproductions of any work entered in the 
exhibition for publicity and education purposes, 
unless otherwise notified by the artist in 
writing. All selected art is subject to 
reproduction in detail. The Everson reserves the 
right to refuse any work that does not contain 
the same qualities as the image submitted. All 
selected art must remain on view at the Everson 
until the close of the exhibition.
The entry of an artwork in Fit to be Bound will 
constitute the artist’s agreement with these stated conditions.

ENTRY PROCEDURE
Instructions must be followed completely or entries will not be accepted.

All media are acceptable. Artists making 
sculptural books are strongly encouraged to 
submit. All entries must have been executed 
within the past two years. Entries must be 
received by 5:00 p.m. Monday, February 1, 2010.

2. EACH ENTRANT MAY SUBMIT UP TO TWO WORKS, with 
a total of not more than five images. Digital 
images must be on CD in jpeg format, and each 
image must be clearly labeled with the artist’s 
name, title of work, date, medium and dimensions.

3. ASSEMBLE AND SUBMIT THE FOLLOWING:
• Entry form
• 1 CD with slide list
• Short biography and artist statement (300 words or less)
• Description of the work (250 words or less)
• A non-refundable handling fee of $30 or $20 for Everson members. Your
$30 may be applied to an Everson membership at the participating level
($50). Checks or money orders only, payable to the Everson Museum of Art.
• Entries received without handling fee will not be accepted.
• Self-addressed, stamped envelope for return of materials

INSTRUCTIONS FOR FINALISTS
Finalists will be notified by email by February 
16, 2010. All artworks chosen will be exhibited 
in Fit to be Bound at the Everson Museum of Art 
from April 24-July 11, 2010. The Museum may 
decline finalist’s entries that do not contain 
the same qualities as the submitted slides.

Artwork by finalists may be delivered in person 
or by mail. All entries must be received by the 
Museum on March 1-2, 2010 between 9.00am and 
4.00pm. Objects exhibited will be returned from 
the Everson Museum of Art July 12-14, 2010.

RETREIVAL OF MATERIALS
Slides, CDs or videos will be returned only if a 
self-stamped and addressed, business sized manila 
envelope accompanies the entry. The documentation 
of finalists’ artworks will be kept until the end 
of the exhibition and will be returned to the artists with their work.
