[GBW] hyphenating labels

According to Bernard Middleton in The Restoration of Leather Bindings on
page 200 :
"Lettering on books of the late seventeenth century and those of the
eighteenth century tends to be smaller and more regularized with formal
contractions such as:"
He then has an illustration with the following (centered of course)

HEAWOOD
ON THE
HISTY OF
PARLIAMT

The Y of history is smaller, raised up a bit with a dot or period beneath it
and the same with the T of Parliament.
He continues on with good information and getting the book would be a good
idea if you don't have it.
I do not think it would be appropriate at all to make a sideways label for
books of this era.
Good luck!

Subject: [GBW] hyphenating labels

What, if any, is the general practice for hyphenating words on narrow spine
labels….particularly for 18th or 19th century books or even earlier? Does
one go with as much of the word that will fit and stop? Is the hyphen used
or just a continuation of the word on the next line? Is a sideways label
acceptable?
