Butler Library, Room 523

Co-sponsored with Columbia University Rare Book and Manuscript Library
Refreshments will be served

Sonja Drimmer is a PhD candidate in the department of art history at
Columbia University. She holds an M.A. from the University of York in
England, and a B.A. from Brown University. Sonja focuses on illuminated
manuscripts of late medieval England, particularly those which
contain literary texts.

Within the collection at The Morgan Library and Museum is a manuscript
of John Gower's Confessio Amantis (MS M126), containing 108 of an
original 110 miniatures. Both the sumptuous quality of this manuscript
and the abundance of miniatures illustrating it, are uncommon for a
late-medieval secular and non-scholastic work.
Ms. Drimmer will discuss the tangible and theoretical space in which
image creates stability among and around the words of a very volatile
text. She will also demonstrate that this manuscript produces meanings
by framing its textual content within images and layouts that belong to
numerous manuscript conventions of this era.

Columbia University is located at 2960 Broadway at 116th Street Butler
Library is located on the south side of the Quad

The lecture is free, but please RSVP to Georgia Southworth at
southworthconservation at gmail.com or call 646-247-3727.
