I've removed endpapers from 19th century books and been pleasantly surprised
by the odor of cloves given off by the dampened lining papers. These were
under marbled pastedowns, but there was no evidence of oil migration.
Oil of cloves was often given in paste recipes. It doesn't keep the paste
from going bad, but it supposedly repells insects and it makes for a nice
work enviroment.
